Some Little Thoughts

TO MY BETTERS

I think that I shall never know
Of all the things I have said and done.
Of the people I have wounded,
Of my failures, not a single apologetic word
Is recorded in the ledger of my sins.

Too late it is to ask to be atoned
Of those acts for which I truly am ashamed.
How can I undo those many iniquities?
My past wrongs remain unadorned,
I cannot undo, acts of my past choosing.

Against the cliffs, violent surf
Carves out its work upon the shoreline bare.
And, then, retards to waters warm and calm
Only to return as it is ordained
By Nature’s way as it has been and shall be for ever there.

For man, it need not follow Nature’s path,
A better way is there for one to see.
The way is the love of man,
The understanding of that which is good and right
And shall always be the way of shining light.
