Some Little Thoughts

Songs of the Night

Softly, there! The sweetness of the evening!
Perfumed air, pervading darkness,
Reaching every corner of the garden.
I view my life; my love; the beauty of this peace.

As birds prepare to rest
In the safety of the highest bough,
Come! Listen to my songs!
They are for you; they exemplify
How I show my love -- My cherished one. I sigh:
My heart; my life; ever and forever.

Soon, the garden will wear the cloak of black.
Only hardened shapes, the merest outline that was day
May be viewed: Unclear; obscured definition; colourless.
But no darkness can erase the mind's reality.

Indelibly, the shapes are engraved in my mind.
No reflected light shows me the way
Out of darkness and the mind's torment:
I go, excitedly, into the full blaze of day!
Your image, as with all shapes and sounds, stay
With me. My song cuts the darkness of the night: Ever and forever.

A life will last, but one breath!
Then, it is past -- Never to return.
My songs to you will ever be
As long as two hearts beat as one.

Sweet songs of day! Sweet peace of night! Sweet songs of love!
As with Cupid's arrow, flying straight to the heart
Of Apollo, pierce the heart of my lover
That she may, unlike Daphne, the leaden arrow of Cupid,
Having hardened her heart to all men,
Listen to the melody of my songs
And come to me. Let my arms enfold you
In a lover's cocoon where you may dwell, long,
Until the day will come and
I shall leave my garden, forever. To return: Never.
