Some Little Thoughts
by Raymonde Sacklyn
Learning
I’ve learned a lot in my long
years of life;
I’ve learned so fast, I can’t believe it’s true;
I’ve mastered so many skills of late
That I can’t believe my absorption rate;
To think: My father thought
I wouldn’t even learn to use a knife!
I’ve learned about building
blocks and chalk;
I’ve learned how to wash my face;
I’ve learned how to make my bed so well
That I can’t recall my mother’s yell;
To think: My father thought
I wouldn’t even learn to talk!
I’ve struggled and mastered all
of my sums;
I know all about school;
I’ve learned so much about
What’s wrong and right
That people may say I’m just too bright;
To think: My father thought
I wouldn’t even learn the drums!
I’ve learned about words and
tenses;
I’ve learned about great deeds of men;
I’ve learned so much from reading books
That I must be careful of my eyes and my looks;
To think: My father thought
I wouldn’t even learn about senses!
The list of things for me to
learn,
Can’t be much longer, of that I am sure:
How much does one need to know,
About life, death, the rain and the snow?
To think: My father
didn’t even teach me about the worm!
Parents really don’t know much
-- just like a mouse;
It is we, who really run the world;
Just look around and you’ll see our worth
‘Cause children know the sun
goes round the earth;
And to think: It was the stork
which carried me to this house!
