Some Little Thoughts
by Raymonde Sacklyn
I Wonder
I wonder whats happened at home now.
Do the neighbours still remember my name?
I wonder:
If I return, could I still remember that tree-lined street,
All the duplexes and short-cut lawns;
Will they still all be the same?
I recall
how the sun used to shine,
Lighting up my open, kitchen square.
I wonder:
Will it still be there?
I wonder
whats happened to the milkman,
Whose truck rang out its catchy song,
I wonder:
Does he still deliver ice-cream, juice and eggs,
Dressed in white overalls, whistling,
And carrying all of those things for which I long.
I recall
that quiet, Lyndhurst street
And all my friends, now long gone.
I wonder:
May I ever again return, and feel that I belong?
I wonder
if the curbs are still painted,
With numbers that brighten at the beam of a light.
I wonder:
Does that collie still bark
When the paper-boy comes,
Pulling that colourful cart, that outrageous, wonderful sight?
I recall
so many things I left behind.
And, Oh! How I long for them today!
I wonder:
Is it too late to return to my happy home, now so far away?
