Some Little Thoughts
by Raymonde Sacklyn

TODAY AND YESTERYEAR
There was a time, not so very long ago,
When a doctor would knock upon a sick man’s door,
Enquiring whether or not his patient was doing well or poor.
Sadly, those days of yore are too rarely to be found,
Because, today, money talks loudly, and all too often,
The Hippocratic Oath is dilapidated: Most times, completely forgotten.
Hippocrates was a physician in the ancient Greek Era of Pericles.
He was the outstanding giant in the history of his art.
Today, too few do people recall, respecting this physician’s part.
A mother nurses, smiling as her child sucks her life-giving milk.
She watches as she, alone, could understand, regardless of all around.
She watches her baby’s sucking the nipples of her breast: No other sound.
A mother’s love is one that stretches from the day of a child’s birth.
Mostly, her love has no parallel: It is forever and a day.
No stronger love could endure, yesterday, and to today.
The world, today, is not very different from that of yesteryear:
Death seems to be everywhere: From the crib to the gun,
Causing death’s horrors, taking the life of many a treasure’s son.
Today, war-making machines are well known: Everywhere!
They have the ability to destitute entire lives in their trail.
The innocent die, not knowing why: They cry; they bleed; then wail.
Voraciousness, today, is the key for many a man and woman,
Greed burns the cancer of the brain, making claim for the right
To acquire that they have not, regardless of the day or the night.
One is told that religion is required for man to be good.
Pray to a god and one’s answers will be heard,
But, man carries a weapon, just in case to kill a bird.
How many deaths are sufficient to calm the killers’ glut?
Where is the love of life in a world where death leads the way?
In today’s world, who demands peoples’ how, when, and its sway?
Are there answers of the problems of the day?
Cannot man learn to live in harmony? Can he learn to adore?
Putting aside all; sup the milk of kindness; one should implore?
